How do you paint a football helmet face mask?

I bought a new face mask and its black our coaches want face masks we buy to be red. The one I bought has a rubber covering and if I paint that that will end up flaking off the paint is there any way to do this right?How do you paint a football helmet face mask?
Probably your best bet will be to spray paint it the desired color. That's still not a guarantee that it will last, but I'd think it would last longer than if you used a brush.
