Why would the boys in Lord of the Flies wear a mask? What's the symbolic function for the characters?

They wear it to prove to the rest of the boys that they are more ';savage'; and tribal like than the rest of the kids. The masks represent the end of democracy and their world before they crashed.Why would the boys in Lord of the Flies wear a mask? What's the symbolic function for the characters?
Wow, I thought about that yesterday...I think the pig represents puberty or testosterone...I haven't read that since high school, so I forgot some of the things we interpreted.





But I think the boys represent the government and the cabinet...
